7 Common Interior Design Mistakes

common interior design mistakes

As my client base has grown, I’ve noticed a few common missteps that keep a space from feeling cohesive and well put together.  Thankfully with a few simple tweaks, most of these common interior design mistakes can be easily remedied.  Have a read and then take a lot around your space, have you unknowingly committed any of these? What tweaks are you going to make to achieve a polished designer look?

Interior Trend: Tile Statement Wall

Tile Statement Wall

The concept of a statement wall has been around for many years – from paint to wallpaper to moldings, there’s nothing new about adding interest to a space using a feature wall.  But a fresh and fabulous take on them is a Tile Statement Wall.  No matter your budget, the addition of cement, marble or ceramic tile is a great way to add colour and impact to your bathroom.

Interior Trend: Antique Rugs

antique rugs

There is no question that antique rugs are having a moment right now – personally I think we can thank Becki Owens and Amber Lewis.  Both designers are known for adding antiques rugs to the spaces they design.  Probably one of the reasons they are two of my favorite designers.  I had the pleasure of hearing Amber speak earlier this year and her down to earth, SoCal vibe makes her all the more lovable. But I digress, I’m talking about antique rugs today, I’ll save girl crushes for another day 😉

15 Outdoor Spaces I Could Spend All Summer In

outdoor spaces

With Victoria Day Long Weekend (affectionately known as May Long) only a few days away, that signals to many of us Canucks time to get our outdoor spaces summer ready.  Summer after all is about outdoor living, and with such a short season around these parts, it’s best we get on it!  I’ve pulled together 15 spaces that are sure to inspire you, from a picnic table under a pergola and a Moroccan oasis to pool side lounging and swinging in a whimsical chair, you’ll never want to come in!

Choosing the Right Rug

choosing the right rug

There a few key elements I habitually add to every space I design: warm woods, a touch of metal, fresh florals and a rug.  For me, rugs are the perfect piece to add texture, depth, a pop of colour or a bit of warmth to a space.  But as with most things these days the options for rugs are endless.  So to prevent any feelings of overwhelm, I’m simplifying things when it comes to choosing the right rug by breaking down rugs into the two main types: Synthetic and Wool.

Choosing the Right White Paint

There is no denying, I love white when it comes to choosing paint for a project.  Perhaps that’s because it creates a beautiful blank canvas to work with or immediately lightens and brightens a space.  In any case I love it and find myself convincing clients to embrace it as well.  But not all whites are created equal, so today I’m sharing some of my absolute favorites, the ones I go to all the time.

Hygge

Hygge

Have you heard about Hygge, most commonly pronounced ‘hoo-gah’?  It is predicted to be what Marie Kondo was to homes in 2015 and 2016.  Shorted listed to be the Oxford Dictionary International Word of the Year for 2017, today I’m sharing everything you need to know about this hot new (and dare I say much needed) trend.

Pantone Colour of the Year 2017

pantone colour of the year 2017

A few weeks ago Pantone announced it’s Colour of the Year for 2017, Greenery, to mixed reviews.  What I love about the colour of the year announcement is the incredible thought that goes behind each year’s choice and how it opens us to consider colours we would have written off.  I must admit when I first saw this year’s choice, I thought there was no way I could see myself incorporating it into a space, but as the colour has started to emerge in fashion and home decor, I have to say I’m warming up to it.
