Hygge
Have you heard about Hygge, most commonly pronounced ‘hoo-gah’? It is predicted to be what Marie Kondo was to homes in 2015 and 2016. Shorted listed to be the Oxford Dictionary International Word of the Year for 2017, today I’m sharing everything you need to know about this hot new (and dare I say much needed) trend.
I first learned about Hygge from one of my wisest, dearest, and given her knowledge of Hygge before I had even heard of it, trendiest friends. Originally from Norway, it was adopted by the Danes in the 1800s. TIME Magazine explains it as a Danish word which ‘broadly means an approach to living that embraces positivity and enjoyment of everyday experiences.’ Said to be one of the core concepts of the attitudes to life in the Nordic region. In layman’s term’s, it’s the Danish word for Cozy. Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute and author of The Little Book of Hygge, says the word has been around for centuries and is a central part of Danish culture and DNA. ‘For us, it’s not a lifestyle move, it’s simply a way of living and how we do things.’
World politics, natural disasters, busier than ever schedules – it’s not surprising that we’re all craving a little Hygge. Denmark and other countries in the region are consistently on top when it comes to global happiness rankings, so it makes good sense to turn to them for clues to happiness and enjoyment. The most obvious being Hygge.
Like all good things, it’s not long before North America consumes it (think quinoa and acai 😉 ) and Hygge is no different. Kevin Harter, VP of Fashion Direction for the Bloomingdale’s Home department, says ‘Hygge is making its way from Denmark to the U.S. at Bloomingdale’s, it is a concept that we are bringing to life through our product assortment and creative direction in catalogs and in-store visual displays.’ Thinks faux furs, scented candles and cozy pillows. Even IKEA has complied a list of ways to incorporate Hygge into your life.
I for one adore the concept of Hygge, I think we could all stand to incorporate a little into our lives – slowing down, getting cozy and connecting with those we love, yes please. What is your favorite way to bring this trend into your life and space? I’d love to know, please share in the comments below!
