Entry Way

I believe the old adage: you only get one first impression to be true – both in life and in the home. From the moment someone walks into your space, an impression is set.

Which is why the entry way is the perfect place to set the tone for your home. I absolutely love this entry way designed by Becky Owens. Smart, functional and high on style.

When designing your entry way, start by determining what needs must be met. Storage for scarfs, toques umbrellas, etc? Somewhere to toss your keys or the mail? Something to perch on while putting on shoes? Once you’ve determined what you need in the space, the fun begins!

Keep the colour and style of your home in mind when choosing pieces, it can be easy to get distracted but keeping things consistent will enhance the overall effect . I think a rug is a must for the entry way, not only does it define the space, but it’s a great way to inject colour and texture. Turkish Kilims, like the one Becky used, are a great choice, they are available in many different shapes and sizes and come in a plethora of beautiful colours and patterns, which can be great for masking dirt.

Next, somewhere to toss your keys, the mail, and anything else that may be in your hands when you get home is essential. I love the clear Lucite console Becky uses, it pairs perfectly with the colourful Turkish rug, a perfect mix of modern and traditional. While substantial in size, because it’s Lucite, it allows the space to feel open.

While the African JuJu Hat over the console adds drama and certainly makes a statement, I’m a fan of a mirror in the entry way – that quick check before you walk out the door is so important! And this round gold rimmed mirror is the perfect partner to the console and rug.

If space permits, somewhere to sit to put on and take off shoes is key, especially if you have small children. This bench serves double duty as it offers open storage underneath.

And since you can never have too much storage, a large basket like the one Becky used is perfect, not only does it compliment the rug, add texture to the space, but it provides a great function. Find one with a lid and you can leave it for a few days before having to sort through it 🙂

And lastly, lighting, lighting, lighting! There is nothing worse than greeting guests or doing a final check before heading out in a poorly lit entry. A fabulous fixture is a great way to make a statement and set the tone for the rest of your house. If the lighting throughout your space is brass, pick a brass fixture with a similar feel. Remember consistency is key!
