Design in Mexico City

If you read my post on Mexico City last week, you know this city has my heart.  Amazing art and culture, delicious food and plenty of good design.  From galleries, warehouses, and markets, I’m sharing my favourite places to shop interior design in Mexico City today.

Located in an eclectic Deco house in Polanco from 40’s, Decada is a unique store showcasing a collection of mid-century pieces from American, Danish and Mexican designers.  While living in Berlin, owners Cecilia Tena and Lucía Corredor were inspired to bring a little bit of Berlin’s playfulness into modern Mexican interiors. Their pieces are in excellent condition and displayed in inspiring vignettes.

Owned by Maggie Galton and Eladia Hagerman, Onora is home to beautiful modern, understated versions of traditional Mexican crafts. Instead of the vibrant colours typically associated with Mexican fiestas, their palette is restrained.  Black, white, grey, beige, and the occasional pop of color – girls after my own heart.

You’ll find Studio davidpompa in a mansion (it was being restored when we were there) in Roma Norte.  His collection of beautiful modern lighting, tiles and furnishings were created with a strong commitment to Mexican identity, materials and craftsmanship.

Trouve in Roma Norte began as a place to find vintage watches and cameras. But in 2005, the gallery was re-conceptualized with a focus on recovered and intervened furniture. Focusing on modernist design from the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s you could easily spend hours in the warehouse eyeing all the treasures.

If market’s are your thing, Mercado Lagunilla has been on the same site since Colonial times and is one of the biggest covered markets in the city, selling food, furniture, and cheap clothing.  On Sunday’s antique dealers set up stalls on the streets surrounding the market.  While there is a lot of junk to sort through, like most markets, there is treasure to be found.
